FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • The time limit for all Fall48 films is between 1-3 minutes. You may also include up to 30 seconds of end credits.

  • The maximum number of team members is five (5). This is production crew only, and does NOT include your cast or actors.

  • No. Actors and any delivery drivers (hi mom and dad!) do not count towards the 5 person limit.

  • You are allowed to use any camera, audio, lighting, or production related equipment that you have available. Fall48 films of the past have been shot on things as simple as a cellphone with no additional sound or lighting equipment, all the way up to professional level Netflix-approved cameras with full audio and lighting setups. Remember that the judges are focusing on story though! It’s less about the gear and more about how successful you can be with what you have.

  • Your film must be uploaded to FilmFreeway AND submitted to the Fall48 film festival page no later than 4 PM on Sunday of the competition weekend.

You may still submit your film late (and we encourage you to do so!), but it will not qualify for awards or prizes. You could still be selected to screen, and you will still receive feedback from our judges!

There will be an additional survey sent to you that must be completed by 8PM the following day (Monday) where you will submit your script, release forms, and other information.

  • There are a handful of additional required documents you must submit to remain eligible for awards and prize money. You will submit all of these documents via a custom Google Form you will receive on Sunday. You will have one additional day to complete this form - all of these items must be turned in by the end of the day on the Monday following competition weekend.

    • A copy of the script for the film.

    • All release forms for the crew (signed by a parent or legal guardian if under the age of 18) along with a “Credits” list of cast and crew.

    • Location releases for all privately owned locations depicted in the film.

    • Any music licenses, releases, or agreements for music used in the film.

This form will take some time to complete - so try to stay organized and assign this to one specific person on your team!

  • Screenplays do not need to adhere to any industry-accepted standard and can be in any format (typed, handwritten, etc)

  • Each crew member, actor and private location owner (homeowner or renter, business owner or manager, etc) will need to complete a release form. There are templates provided to you in the Fall48 Essentials pack, and available on our resources page.

  • Thee are important contracts that protect both you and the property owner. They are required for any private location. You should not need one for shooting in public spaces, but check with your local government if you are unsure. Bigger cities do often require you to at least notify someone of your planned actions.

  • In most cases, yes, but you should look to your local government ordinances and be sure you aren’t breaking any laws. If you are shooting anywhere on the University of Idaho campus that isn’t behind a locked door, you should be considered good to go.

  • No. All footage should be captured specifically for this project. No stock footage or footage from previous film or commercial work should be used.

  • Yes, you are welcome to use music found on royalty-free websites, but you’ll simply need to download the license and send that along with the rest of your paperwork. There are many options for you to explore music on our resources page.

  • Send an email to howerton@uidaho.edu to check in!

  • Films are due by 4 PM PST. The submission process can take some time, so be sure to plan ahead! If you haven't used FilmFreeway before, it would be a good idea to set up your account well before the deadline. Films submitted late may still be considered for our Livestream screening but may not be included for judging or awards. We strongly encourage you to finish and submit your films even if you miss the 4 PM deadline!

For your final film file, the only technical settings you need to consider are that your final film should be output as a 1920x1080 24p .mp4 or .mov file and must be under 10GB in size (ideally much smaller, but this is the cap from FilmFreeway). If you are shooting with a different aspect ratio, please letterbox or pillarbox your final output file to match 1920x1080.

When you're ready to submit your project, complete the following steps:

Sign in or create a free FilmFreeway.com account.

Once you are logged in, click on the "My Projects" tab in the upper right.

Then the "Add a Project" button.

There are many fields available for you to fill in, but the only required field here is the project title - which must include your team name, so if you are in a hurry, you may enter your title and team name as the title and move on

You may also complete this step well in advance.

Upload your file - this may take some time, but you can continue to submit your project before your film has completed its processing.

Once you've created and uploaded your project, visit our festival page at https://filmfreeway.com/fall48 and hit the submit button.

In the pop-up window, select your project from the drop-down in the upper left.

Then choose the category that best represents you and your team (current student/future student/alumni, etc).

Click the "Add to cart & Checkout" button and await confirmation.

Once you've submitted your film, please also email howerton@uidaho.edu a copy of all your required documents:

A copy of the screenplay for the film.

All release forms for the crew (signed by a parent or legal guardian if under the age of 18) along with a “Credits” list of cast and crew.

Talent/location releases for all cast and privately owned locations depicted in the film.

A copy of all releases/licenses for any music used in your film.

  • YES! We still accept films for up to one week after the festival closes. We know and understand how hard it is to pull this off, so if you get close but don’t quite make it, we encourage you to stick it out and wrap it up within the week. We will still have judges review any late films, and your film could still be selected to be featured in the live stream, but unfortunately, late films will not quality for awards.

  • Do your best to push your ideas! Try not to make a script that simply takes the character, prop, and line of dialogue and merges them all together as the plot of your film - write a film that weaves each element into your film in a unique or even subtle way.

You are allowed to expand on the genre a bit… we’ve given you purposefully vague genres - how can you make it unique and interesting while still staying true to the baseline genre?

Remember - the character in your prompt doesn't have to be a main character; they just need to be a character in the film that we can identify somehow

Similarly, your line of dialogue doesn’t have to be spoken, it could be seen, written, texted, printed, etc.

Pay a lot of attention to sound! This is half of the viewers' experience with your film, and it's been proven that people will forgive poor visuals or footage much more than they will forgive bad audio, so make sure to monitor your sound while you’re shooting, and get those microphones close to the source of the sounds to give us something good to tune in with!

Be willing to compromise - changes will happen, and the best way forward is to be flexible and creative in your problem-solving!

Judges will be looking for creative ways in which you've weaved your assigned elements into your story - so have fun with it!

  • There are no restrictions for the maturity level of content, but participants are encouraged to produce films appropriate for a broad audience.

  • Yes, BUT! Not until after our livestreamed event, typically held at the end of November or beginning of December.

  • Yes. FilmFreeway allows you the option of uploading your film file to their servers, or to embed it via YouTube or Vimdeo. You can password protect it via Vimeo as well.

Do not make your film public until AFTER our live stream event, or you may end up disqualifying yourself for any awards or prizes.
